jamie's 2022-2023 apple ranking
it's FALL TIME!!! which means it's also peak apple season :) and my indulgence this year has been trying different apple varieties to figure out what i like the most! i also decided to rank them because there's a big ranking site but the guy speaks like a redditor. so i suppose it's my responsibility to provide the people with opinions..
my favorite kind of apples are juicy and more sweet than tart! if you also want to rate apples i highly recommend, it's been very fun :)
note: almost all these rankings are based on eating one apple. don't take any rating too seriously

sweetango
man. this is just a Really Good apple. when biting into it, the skin is snappy and crisp. it's a perfect balance of tart and sweet, and it's fairly juicy without being wet. it's like if you took a cosmic crisp (baseline for good apples) and just elevated it to baseline for Fantastic apples. my new go to
envy
i tried this apple for the first time during all this and really liked it! it was not too juicy but still crisp, sweeter than the honeycrisp i tried, but still had some tartness! it also had a noticeably thick skin, which i enjoyed.
smitten
a 2023 addition! this apple is really good. i'd need to retry an envy apple to judge if it'd take the #2 spot, but i feel solid about giving it #3. it's not grainy and it's gt a really good balance of sweet and tart!
honeycrisp
a classic favorite! can't go wrong with this. the one i had was a bit less sweet than the envy one, which is great sometimes! true to it's name, it's crisp and pretty juicy! way thinner skin than envy, too.
cosmic crisp
this was another wet apple. but it was really delicious! it's pretty much exactly what i'd consider a perfect standard apple. well balanced and tastes good. (ironically, despite this apples selling point being how long it stays good, mine was going bad LOL. not the apples fault but the bad parts tasted so.. Putrid. i couldn't not mention it)
rave
this apple was WET. it was incredibly juicy and pleasantly tart! literally felt like i drank it, but from the tartness my mouth was left that weird dry when i got done. a great apple if i'm craving it, but i usually don't want apple juice down my arm while i eat.
opal
another 2023 addtion. this apple is interesting, it's got a okay flavor that's reminiscent of other fruits! what fruits? Unsure. but there's something in there. the apple itself is just okay though, it's kind of grainy and an average sweetness. by far the best yellow apple i've tried
snapdragon
i only had a small amount of this, due to a retesting! it reminded me of a gala but less grainy and more crisp. perfectly acceptable apple, just not one of my absolute favorites.

a cheap apple that does the job. it's grainy and generally kind of Meh... but i've heard it's good for baking! i'd only buy this if i'm broke but craving apples
ambrosia
a very strange eat. this was EXTREMELY sweet, almost to the point of being sickly. literally tasted like it was dipped in some kind of syrup.. how do they make these things. overall not my cup of tea, i wouldn't get it again unless i craved it specifically. (10/28/22 update: i ate another and it wasn't nearly as sickeningly sweet! still mediocre though)
golden delicious
sweeter than the other green(ish) apple on this list, but still not something i'd reach for again. very grainy texture and underwhelming taste

i've never liked how tart this is.. i don't find it enjoyable. it's one redeeming quality is that it's good for pies.... i guess. it's better than red delicious atleast

this apple is a liar and a fraud. there is nothing delicious about it. it's grainy, flavorless, and the skin is unpleasant. the only thing this has going for it is price. i'd rather eat no apples than eat this. eternally last place.
